Description

Serhat Filiz’s The Beach is a masterwork of aerial beach comedy a sun-drenched coastal scene viewed from directly above, stretching from the glittering turquoise open sea at the top to the multicolored umbrella-dotted sand at the bottom, packed with dozens of simultaneously unfolding summer stories

Out at sea, the action is already well underway surfers catch waves on the left, a motorboat cuts through the blue, dolphins leap in pairs, a fishing boat loaded with cheerful anglers occupies the upper right, a shark fin circles nearby with menacing calm, and a jellyfish and an octopus observe proceedings from below the surface. A sea turtle glides through the deeper blue, tropical fish school in the middle waters, and a frog presides regally from a rocky outcrop while a large pink man floats serenely past an underwater treasure chest.

At the shoreline, the full spectrum of beach humanity wades, splashes, and bobs children in armbands and rubber rings, families cooling off in the shallows, a baby discovering the sea for the first time, and adults of every shape and disposition making the most of the water with varying degrees of athletic grace. A dog bounds through the surf, a beach ball flies overhead, and the general atmosphere is one of maximum summer joy at maximum summer density.

On the sand, the overhead view reveals a gorgeous patchwork of colorful beach umbrellas striped, polka-dotted, rainbow-segmented, and solid-colored each surrounded by their own domestic beach micro-world of towels, flip-flops, cool boxes, bags, and sunbathing occupants. A Dondurma ice cream vendor wheels his cart through the crowd to the delight of several small customers. Sandcastles are under construction, a seagull investigates an unattended picnic, beach chairs face the sea in orderly rows, and shell collectors, sandcastle builders, sunbathers, and readers each claim their corner of the golden sand. Throughout the scene, Filiz’s characteristic comic characters the large man, the energetic child, the hapless fisherman, the perfectly relaxed sunbather add warmth and humor to every section of the composition. This Magnolia jigsaw is summer at its most gloriously, irresistibly overcrowded
